Why Speed Drills Alone Won’t Make You Faster

Running Injuries

Speed is force, not drills.

Most athletes who want to get faster need force first. To accelerate and to hit top speed, you have to push hard into the ground, both forward and down. That matters more than the technical, drill side.

First, find what’s holding you back

Every athlete is different. You can be very fast at top speed and still have a weak start. So before we train, I test:

  • Sprints with different loads. How much you slow down tells me which part of your sprint needs work.
  • How much force you produce, and how fast you produce it.
  • Your strength in the positions that matter for sprinting.

We always assess and never guess. The testing tells us what you’re good at and what you’re struggling with.

The order I train speed in

  1. Acceleration first. Most athletes need it most. That means heavy sled work, resisted sprints, broad jumps and power work. It has to be heavy.
  2. Top speed. Once you can produce force, we build your max velocity.
  3. Change of direction. Then we teach you to use that speed in your sport.

We retest so you can see it

Raw speed is measured with timing gates, so you see your split times change. I also use video to check your angles and how you project out of your start.

Common questions

Do speed and agility drills make you faster?

Not on their own. Force matters most. If you can’t put force into the ground, drills won’t fix that.

What should I work on first to get faster?

Most athletes need acceleration first: heavy sleds, resisted sprints, broad jumps and power. Top speed and change of direction come after.

How often do athletes train speed with you?

Training is semi-private, 1 to 2 sessions a week.
